KONKRETE JUNGLE

Pre-Apprenticeship Program

Koncrete Jungle (KJ) was founded by the late Johnny D Paul. Our pre-apprentice program operates through Blocks Together (BT). KJ focuses on issues addressing displacement, disenfranchisement of residents with a criminal background, trauma resulting from incarceration, or adverse childhood experiences, and youth development. BT works to bring low income, affordable, and sustainable housing to West Humboldt Park by organizing and advocating for reinvestment of public dollars and reforming practices that have led to the divestment and displacement.

Koncrete Jungle was started by community residents responding to the difficulties faced by residents reintegrating into society after incarceration. KJ has a holistic and unique approach to workforce development. The program focuses on participants’ physical, mental, and spiritual health.

The apprenticeship program consists of 10 weeks of training, job placement, or enrollment in an educational institution. Mentors support participants for one year, offering weekly circles addressing challenges/ triggers that might impede successful completion of the program. Additionally, participants have the opportunity for one on one counseling which allows a pathway to different career opportunities in the housing industry – trades, interior design, project management, and property management.
